Should ICT be used in ESL Classrooms?

Prof. S. Venkateswaran says: In his introducing sentence itself he said that no methodology or process can be prescribed. He says, "send ICT to hell, I will be the last person to use a laptop for teaching students". He made it very clear that downloading, uploading and all types of loadings only adulterate the beauty of teaching. The technicalities used in teaching kills the creative ability of the teacher. Prof. Venkateswaran made it clear that teaching is a creative opportunity to learn and unlearn. Again he wants the participants to rule out all the methodologies and said that the best methodology is the classroom environment.

After 5O’clock P. K. Jayaraj took an extra class. He shared some video clippings and certain activities with the help of those clippings. After his extra session the participants left the classroom with some doubts as to whether they should agree with Prof. Venkateswaran’s views on ICT???

  1. Anyway, Venki's comments have opened up polemics. I teach trainee teachers who teach secondary level students. Those students are 21st century students. They game, text, blog, podcast and facebook through their classes but they say most of their teachers have never used blogs, wikis or podcasts. Those students wants to create something new with the technology. They interact and share using technology. Let us also use technology in our language classrooms. Let Venki rething and reflect???

  2. I agree that teacher is the main source in a classroom, however, the use of ICT in the classroom should not be seen only form the point of view of the teacher alone but we should start looking at it from the student’s perspective as well. If students enjoy inclusion of audio, video and images in the lesson taught by the teacher; if they are attentive and active in the class because of the multimodality effect, then I think we should not compromise on it. I feel the addition of multi media gives a different appearance to the lesson ; it helps to sustain the interest level of the students in the class. But at the end it boils down to how well the teacher integrates media to the lesson. In situations were blackboard could be used if the teacher uses power point then the very objective of using ICT is nullified. Thus to conclude, ICT is like spices in a dish. A cook can prepare a dish without the spices, but the sprinkling of chosen ingredients does give a very different flavor to it.

  3. Should ICT is neccessary in our class room? This question is verry relevant.According to me it is very rellevant nowadays because we are living in such a tecnology supported world. It can bring exact situation and mood in the classroom.teacher can give the the correct model:-pictures,video clips, audios etc. This can also make the students to understand every text easily.

  4. ICT can not be used forICT only. Ido agree that theteacher is thereal source in the class room. But the possibilities of ICT can be entertained effectivelyinorder to make the learner motivated. But the thing is that the teacher should know how and when it should be made useof and to what extent. the intention of the teacher must not beto exhibit his technological competency but afruitful destination.

  5. i do agree that teacher can use ict when tr fails to transact the idea to students. it helps the student to register a particular idea in his/her own way. shall we have to rely more on this? i even doubt the position of a tr when we use ict.we can collect more information by getting access into internet. how can we claim that tr is the main sorce in a class room.

  7. I do agree with the comments of PKJ. But we must think how far it is applicable in the present day classroom. If all the claasrooms are made smart classrooms it will be interesting and effective. Moreover if a teacher does'nt make use of ICT no doubt he'll be an outdated stuff.

  8. Experience at RIESI is however wonderful. An innovative teacher like venkateshwaran sir can perform wonders without ICT.He proved it in the classroom.I salute him for brilliance. The lack of electricity& other facilities keeps a teacher away from ICT in the classroom.
I like to incorporate ICT with my lessons. No doubt it will bring a drastic interest in the children.Even a slow learner will be benefitted by this. Both visual&audio support will enable him to learn everything easily.

  9. dear sv sir there are a number of vedios of "home they bought her warrier dead". if they were used i think the dead soldier would not have died again inside the duster covered with rags. the poor lady would not have cried aloud even before she saw her child.she was suffocated inside the chalkpiece of chalk sir.

  10. dear ict.
i take great pleasure to post my thougt into it.ict is only a spicy variety in adish, but there must be a mother to prepare it. a mother faces situational ups and downs in doing it even if its a KANJI rice soup with love and affection it is relished more than a spicy oily fast food.so i join my hand with model SV sir. teacher must have a current within so even a bare hand he can generate lang.effectively as good as one rely upon ict.

  11. I think ICT can enhance the teaching learning process. It arouses enthusiasm and curiosity among children. It helps the teacher alot to make his ideas clear. It helps the teacher just like machines in the kitchen reduces the workload of anefficient home maker.Iam pretty sure that infuture it will become an unavoidable part of teaching learning process.

  12. Jayaraj Sir, I think certain technical aspects are also important. Teachers should be aware of all the complexities of the online learning environment. You know we face a lot of difficulties. Scheduling the access to the computer, malfunctioning of the hardware and software and problems with the student schedules are some of them. Finally, I think teachers have to give necessary support to the students. They should not leave everything to the computer instructor. I have often seen that most of the teacher participants are often confused by Internet and web-based materials. I think computer instructor has to work with the teacher.

Anyway, I am also happy that discussion in the thread is going fine.

  13. We are delighted to know that more and more participants are joining the discussion thread. Our faculty member Ms. Pooja Giri also made substantial contribution to the discussion. In this context, we would like to make certain things clear. While using ICT for teaching English, teachers have to clearly specify the goals of teaching very clear. But I think we have to understand that technology based instruction is integration. We have to integrate technology with language teaching. Teachers have to think how to integrate technology-based activities into the syllabus rather than adding them into the classroom activities in a disconnected fashion.

I am happy that more and more teachers are actively taking part in the discussion.I have put a number of interesting articles in our blog. Please go through the articles and post your comments about those articles too.

  14. I could agree with Dr.V if technology replace tr. But no doubt technology will mesmerize a class.

  15. Man is the enemy of his ignorance. Every present moments are in a sence a lesseons for our lives. When we get acquinted with the newly evolving ineventions, we realize the utitility of them. First we might have criticised them. Finally we fortgot the criticismand redicules we had made on them. We see at the end the serious users of the the devices. Every new thing faces 3 phases. 1.cricism, 2. ridicule and 3. acceptance. But I know the aged and experinced Vengateswaran sir is a great diplomat to provoke tsunami in the thoughts of participants. Congrats!

  16. environment keeps the gun and experience pulls the trigger. Why can't we approach in thatway.venky sir had given us only a demo ofhow should a teacher be in ateaching learning realia.Ict for Ict"s sake is nothing but a show.It should be in tune with the situation and enviornment.......shanmu

  17. Dear SV sir iagree with you in one sense .There should no compramise on the part of creativity of teacher but we cannot altogethe avoid ICT so we have to mix heaven and Hell

  18. my comment on the article'should ICT be used in ESL classroom'
We can prepare an appropriate background if we start the class using ICT.Before the class the effort of the teacher is more but during the teaching it will become less.If the class is interesting with our activities, bodylanguage and actions it is enough.but sometimes we lack to do such the motivating activities. In this era the ICT presentions aer more appealing to the students.

  19. use the ICT in the classroom in the sake of learning but not the sake of mere ICT. only trigger the student with the use of ICT in the classroom...but other way the ICT kill the imagination os the students ..imagination is needed in the persent circumtances...more than knowledge... feel the thought in the mind of the students...no other than... otherwise .......

  20. ICT ENABLED TEACHING IS GOOD FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS BECAUSE IT IS NOT ONLY INTERESTING BUT ALSO INFORMATIVE. TEACHERS CAN USE ICT WHEN IT IS NECESSARY IN HIS/HER CLASS. IT WOULD BETTER FOR THE TEACHER IF HE/SHE LIMIT THE USAGE OF ICT IN THE CLASSROOM
